Practical ways to help Gaza from far away: direct family support, currency and time tips, how charities differ, and how your community can get involved.
Australia is more than 13,000 kilometres from Gaza, yet many Australians tell us they feel close to what is happening here. If you are looking for practical ways to help Gaza from Australia, this guide is for you. We are the Ashqar family, a displaced family living in Gaza, and we have written down the simple, real steps that people in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide or anywhere else in Australia can take to support families like ours.
The Australian Government has been part of the humanitarian response since October 2023. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Australia directs its funding for Gaza through established partners such as United Nations agencies and the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, and by August 2025 it had committed more than $130 million to help civilians in Gaza and Lebanon. This support matters, but government aid moves through large systems. Individual Australians can add something different: direct, personal help to a specific family.
The most direct way to help Gaza from Australia is to choose one real need and cover it, fully or partly. Our Forms of Assistance page lists each need with its cost in US dollars and a progress bar, including clean drinking water, healthy food for the children, rent support and a solar panel for light. Each need has its own QR code that you can scan with the Binance app. You can read a full step-by-step explanation in Donate to a Family in Gaza: How Your Support Helps.
All our needs are listed in US dollars, so it helps to convert before you give. As a rough guide, one US dollar has usually cost somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 Australian dollars in recent years, so check today's rate in your banking app. Even the price of a weekend coffee each week can make a real difference to a family that needs clean water every month.
Gaza is usually between seven and nine hours behind the east coast of Australia, depending on daylight saving. If you message us through the WhatsApp number in our website footer, please be patient: your evening in Sydney is our late morning, and the internet in Gaza is often weak or cut. We reply as soon as we can.
Registered charities in Australia appear on the national register run by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The ACNC recommends checking its Charity Register before donating to any organisation, and the register also shows whether a donation is likely to be tax deductible. Please note that direct support to a family like ours is a personal gift, not a donation to a registered charity, so it is not tax deductible in Australia. Many people choose to do both: give to large organisations and also support one family directly.
Australians are known for coming together. Schools, workplaces, sports clubs, mosques, churches and community groups can organise a small collection for one specific need, such as a month of clean water or school supplies for the children. A shared goal is easier to reach and creates a real connection between your community and a family in Gaza.
Not everyone can give money, and that is completely fine. Sharing our Family Photos, our Stories & Updates and this article on social media helps other Australians find a family they can trust. Real stories cut through the noise of the news and remind people that behind every headline there are children, parents and daily needs.
The needs in Gaza will not disappear in a week. Following our updates, checking the progress on our assistance page and returning every few months keeps support steady when the news moves on. If you want to understand our daily reality first, read A Daily Struggle for Survival and Support a Family in Gaza: Food, Shelter and Daily Needs.
You do not need to be close to help. When you help Gaza from Australia, a few minutes and a small amount can mean clean water, food and light for a family here. If you are still deciding, our guide How to Help a Family in Gaza explains more ways to make a difference.
Thank you to every Australian who reads our story and chooses to stand with us. When you are ready, visit our Forms of Assistance page and choose the need you would like to support.
